Karachi is currently experiencing a rise in sea levels along its coastal area as cyclone Biparjoy approaches the city. As a precautionary measure, a large-scale evacuation is taking place in the Keti Bandar area of Thatta District, with numerous individuals being relocated to safer locations.
According to the recent advisory from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), cyclone Biparjoy has transitioned from an extremely severe cyclonic storm to a very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS). Over the past 12 hours, the cyclone has progressed in a north-northwest direction and is now situated at approximately 20.7°N latitude and 67.1°E longitude. It is currently positioned around 470km south of Karachi and 460km south of Thatta.
The PMD has reported that the cyclone exhibits maximum sustained surface winds of 140-150 km/hour, accompanied by gusts of 170 km/hour near its center. Additionally, sea conditions around the cyclone’s center are described as phenomenal, with waves reaching a maximum height of 30 feet. The conducive environmental factors, such as a sea surface temperature ranging from 29-31°C, low vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence, are expected to support the cyclone’s strength throughout the forecast period.
Based on the prevailing upper-level steering winds, the cyclone is anticipated to continue moving northward until the morning of June 14th, after which it will recurve northeastward. On June 15th, during the afternoon or evening, the cyclone is projected to make landfall between Keti Bandar (Southeast Sindh) and the Indian Gujarat coast as a very severe cyclonic storm, characterized by winds packing a velocity of 100-120 km/hour.
