Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah announced that an investigation report regarding the Greece boat disaster would be submitted within one week, with a clear assignment of responsibility to those involved in negligence.

The exact number of individuals on board the sunken boat remains unknown to European authorities, with estimates ranging from 400 to over 700. The majority of the passengers hailed from Pakistan, including many from Azad Jammu Kashmir. Foreign media reports indicate that the tragedy has claimed the lives of 80 people, while hundreds are still missing.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the United Nations Human Rights office expressed that around 500 individuals are still unaccounted for, and several casualties have been confirmed. The “horrific tragedy” has left numerous women and children among the missing. The ferry boat, carrying potentially up to 750 people, sank approximately 50 nautical miles off Pylos in southern Greece.

During an interview with a private news channel, the interior minister reassured the public that the government would take decisive action in response to this devastating incident.

In response to the Greek ship accident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the formation of a committee tasked with investigating the matter. The committee has already begun its inquiry, and its findings will be presented within a week, followed by appropriate actions taken by the federal government, as stated by the minister.

The committee’s mandate extends beyond examining the facts surrounding the Greece boat tragedy. It will also identify the loopholes and deficiencies within Pakistan’s legal system that have jeopardized precious lives through human trafficking, both in this specific case and previous incidents. By analyzing similar past incidents, the committee aims to take necessary measures in accordance with the existing legal framework. Furthermore, international coordination will be sought to prevent, control, and punish human smuggling in the future.
